Gareth Southgate urges England players to 'write their own stories'

  • England fans have been warned to behave after an alleged fight with Germany

After defeat to Belgium left England in second place in Group G, the Three Lions have been preparing to face Colombia, who will be led Radamel Falcao, formerly of Manchester United and Chelsea.

England have a awful penalty shootout record but Southgate, who missed the key penalty in the Euro 96 semi-finals, has helped change things.

Gareth Southgate has been fantastic.

He has been practising penalties and certainly there were no problems against Panama.

"I think that's unsafe, we have to treat each game as the most important", he insisted. But Kane is ignoring all the talk around his own performances and England's hopes of success in Russian Federation after reading too much during the dismal Euro 2016 campaign.

"We are a team where we don't carry any passengers, everybody has to really press and work for the team, and if our midfield players, our creative midfield players, are doing that as well then that is a really good sign", said Southgate.

England play Colombia in their World Cup last-16 match on Tuesday, in what is one of the biggest games in the country's recent history.

Belgium's surprising approach to England match
Moments later Pickford let a Michy Batshuayi effort squeeze past him and was rescued by Gary Cahill's goal-line clearance. The youngster ventured in the area, cut inside away from Danny Rose , and curled the ball high into the top left corner.

Southgate himself has painful memories of shoot out failure as he missed the decisive spot kick in the Euro 96 semi-final against Germany at Wembley Stadium.

The 22-year-old thought viewing England's position in what is seen as the easier half of the draw was a trap they could not fall into.

England manager Gareth Southgate has played down suggestions he may have inspired a fashion trend.

But on Monday he was still in England, reducing his chances of returning in time for the game.

"The best teams around the world, the players playing against each other". There are the players who take penalties regularly, who have their own routine and who are able to change depending on the goalkeeper, and others who don't take them as regularly and need to practice one or two stock penalties.

"We have to focus on the game tomorrow".

"Personally, the only pressure is the pressure I put on myself". I'm 20 and if I had to take a penalty for England at a World Cup, I do not think it's an exaggeration to suggest that my skull would quite literally explode out of my head as my bowels disintegrate into dust. We can go further.' The game looks like being a niggly affair after the Swedes tried to wind up their opponents ahead of kick-off. "I'd be willing to step forward", Rashford said.
