Google is letting third-party developers access your Gmail Inbox

But the Journal found that Google "continues to let hundreds of outside software developers scan the inboxes of millions of Gmail users who signed up for email-based services offering shopping price comparisons, automated travel-itinerary planners or other tools". The access settings allow data companies and app developers to see user's emails, including recipient addresses, timestamps, and entire messages. Some allow people to write emails in special fonts, or to make it easier to find images to send to others, while others make it easier for people to organise their emails into folders.
The email scanning comes into play when you give third-party apps permission to access your Gmail account details. From there you will be able to see all the apps that now have access to your Google account, and you can remove some of them if you no longer use them or if you're not comfortable with it.
Gmail has about 1.4 billion users while Microsoft and Oath, the group formed after Verizon bough Yahoo!, are the next two biggest email providers. According to the report, apparently it has become "common practice" for marketing companies to scan the emails of their users, although we suppose common isn't necessarily good. "We have since stopped this practice and expunged all such data in order to stay consistent with our company's commitment to achieving the highest standards possible for ensuring privacy". The increased scrutiny follows the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which a data firm was accused of misusing the personal information of more than 80 million Facebook users in an attempt to sway elections. Edison Software did the same for "hundreds of users" when building a new feature, the paper says.
One is Return Path, an app that collects data for marketers from users' inboxes. It may do some internal testing to make sure of this, as well.
Return Path posted a response to the report on its website, saying it had worked with the reporter on the story and felt they were "extremely and somewhat carelessly selective" in what information the reporter chose to include.
The app companies say that their actions are covered by their user agreements.
