Is footballer Mesut Ozil German or Turkish?

  • “This is the saddest thing to read as an athlete, and more importantly as a human being,” said Sania Mirza as she came out in support of Mesut Ozil

The Gunners playmaker announced his retirement from worldwide football on Sunday, citing discrimination from the DFB as part of the reasoning for his decision.

The new Arsenal manager Emery might have hoped for a more straightforward assignment as he spoke to the media for the first time in south-east Asia but the morning was overshadowed by the continuing furore surrounding Ozil's decision.

"He feels here with us that he can work every day, and it is good for us that he chose to come here and work with us before our two matches".

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson and midfielder Alex Iwobi sat alongside Ozil at the fan event in Singapore with the former admitting new coach Unai Emery had been very active in his first few training sessions with the club.

Emery says he has not yet spoken to Ozil about his decision, which was explained across several lengthy statements on Twitter.

"He feels here with us that he can work every day, and it is good for us that he chose to come here and work with us before our two matches".

Germany´s football federation swiftly denied the allegation of racism, while Erdogan called Ozil to praise his decision - which follows a resurgence of the German far right.

"Normality is the best thing for him and I am sure he´s going to do a big season with us this year.it´s very, very personal and here I want to help him".

When Emery was asked about the player's mental state going into the new season, the coach said: "I'm sure he's going to have a great season with us".

"What happened between him and the national team is his private matter so this is not an issue for us", said Cech.

"We are like his home".

"He is a key player for us so obviously he is the main candidate [to become captain]".

"He has been working really hard so hopefully he will be fit".
