Palestinian health officials say three Palestinians were killed and one other was critically wounded.

In Gaza, medics said a man and a 14-year-old boy were killed and dozens wounded by army fire, bringing to 154 the Palestinian death toll during demonstrations launched on March 30 to demand rights to land lost to Israel in the 1948 war of its founding. Palestinian villagers confronted the Israeli forces, who responded by firing tear gas.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman tweeted that expanding the Adam settlement was the "best answer to terrorism".

Some 300 Palestinians - majority assailants, Israel says - have also been killed in that period, according to news agencies. "The terrorist was shot and killed", an IDF statement said.

Palestinian demonstrators gather during a protest at the Israel-Gaza border, in the southern Gaza Strip July 27, 2018. Eyewitnesses in Adam reported seeing a suspicious vehicle leaving the settlement shortly after the attack.

Lone Palestinian attackers have carried out multiple deadly stabbings and car-rammings against Israelis in recent years.

Thursday's attack broke months of relative calm in the West Bank, which has seen only sporadic clashes between Palestinians and troops, and a marked decrease in terror attacks.

The last stabbing attack in a West Bank settlement was in April, when a Palestinian tried to stab an Israeli with a screwdriver near a petrol station in an industrial area connected to the Maale Adumim settlement east of Jerusalem.

Three Hamas militants, and a fourth man, were killed by Israeli tank fire.

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which rules Gaza, praised the "courageous operation" in the West Bank, without claiming responsibility for it.

"The West Bank is ready and able to avenge the blood of the martyrs", it said.

The army said in a statement Wednesday it was "targeting Hamas military posts in the Gaza Strip" after soldiers were shot at.
