Speaking after a meeting with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts in Tokyo, Pompeo said his two days of talks in Pyongyang had been productive and conducted in good faith.
Pompeo was in North Korea over the weekend meeting with officials, not Kim himself, to discuss the return of the remains of US soldiers who were killed in the Korean War and to further press for the dismantling of a North Korean missile engine test site.
After discussions in Pyongyang, North Korea's foreign ministry said that the USA was making unilateral demands aimed at forcing it into giving up its nuclear arsenal.
Despite the criticism, North Korea's Foreign Ministry said the country's leader, Kim Jong-un, still wanted to build on the "friendly relationship and trust" forged with President Trump during their summit meeting in Singapore on June 12.
It was Mr Pompeo's first visit to the North since last month's summit between Kim Jong-un and President Donald Trump. "The North Koreans understand that and have not challenged that". "China, on the other hand, may be exerting negative pressure on a deal because of our posture on Chinese Trade-Hope Not!"In Beijing on Tuesday, when asked about Trump's comments, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said, "First, China's position on the Korean peninsula issue is consistent". Kim ended Pompeo's visit on a positive note, telling the top United States diplomat just before he boarded his plane, "We will produce an outcome, results".
An unnamed Ministry spokesman lamented the American attitude towards denuclearization as "so regretful" and its own hope for friendly talks as "so naive as to be foolish" because the USA insists on North Korea's getting rid of its illegal nuclear weapons.
On North Korea talks just concluded, Pompeo said: "We raised a full range of issues with them, all the issues that are important to both the United States and Japan".
Practically, assuaging Kim's security fears could require risky choices for the U.S. and its North Asian allies, such as rolling back America's nuclear umbrella or pulling back its troops in South Korea. "Sanctions will remain in place until final, fully verified denuclearization". China is North Korea's traditional ally and main trading partner, and is key to maintaining sanctions on Pyongyang.
And over the weekend, ABC News reported on tensions at the talks, suggesting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Pompeo appeared to have rubbed each other up the wrong way.
DPRK is short for Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official title.
"(It) will take place at the border and that process will begin to develop over the days that follow", he said as he boarded his plane for Tokyo.
The Foreign Ministry said while they had wanted to discuss establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula and declaring an official end to the Korean War, the U.S. side will stick to unilateral demand for complete declaration and verification of Pyongyang's nuclear program. If I paid attention to what the press said, I'd go nuts, and I refuse to do that.
"That was a fairly serious insult directed against Pompeo", said Christopher Hill, who formerly served as US ambassador to South Korea and lead negotiator with North Korea. "We never thought this was going to be easy, that's why the consultations continue".
Graham cited the ongoing trade war between Washington and Beijing as the possible motivation. "We're in a fight with China", Graham told "Fox News Sunday". -Vietnamese business community in Hanoi, Pompeo said Vietnam's experience since the normalization of relations with the U.S.in 1995 should be proof for North Korea that prosperity and partnership with the U.S.is possible after decades of conflict and mistrust.
