  • Why conservatives should support Roe v. Wade

President Trump is expected to announce his choice for Supreme Court justice on Monday evening.

On Monday night, President Donald Trump will end the suspense; on prime-time television he'll announce who his SCOTUS nominee is for the Supreme Court seat being vacated by Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Some conservatives are disappointed with President Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Trump said that Kavanaugh has "impeccable credentials" and is "universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

Kavanaugh has caught a small amount of flack from conservatives for a dissent that helped uphold a key tenet of Obamacare (his minority opinion had nothing to do with the constitutionality of the program-rather he took issue with the court's jurisdiction in the case). "There's no way to sugarcoat it", said Dawn Laguens, Planned Parenthood executive vice president.

Kavanaugh not only had ties to the Bush administration but he also served under special prosecutor Kenneth Starr during the investigation into former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s. This may also not be Trump's last opportunity to appoint to the highest court in the United States: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg is 85, and Justice Stephen Breyer turns 80 in August. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Joe Donnelly of IN and Heidi Heitkamp North Dakota. The Casey court did impose some restrictions on abortion rights and Democrats worry that overruling Roe will hurt women. Dozens of additional nominations are pending - a list that will soon include Trump's second nominee for the highest court in the land. In a case in which an undocumented minor in USA custody sought an abortion, he wrote in his dissent that requiring the Trump administration to assist the teenager would not recognize the government's "permissible interest in favoring fetal life, protecting the best interests of a minor and refraining from facilitating abortion".

"I'm getting very close to making a final decision", Trump said.

The process is arduous, with the private meetings giving way to days of testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats.

Remaining signatories reaffirm commitment to Iran nuclear deal
Several major firms - including France's Total and Peugeot, and Russia's Lukoil - have said they are preparing to leave. My mandate is crystal clear: Forge practical solutions.

McConnell's argument, per sources who have heard him make it directly, is that Kethledge is non-controversial and would not face the same problems in the Senate confirmation process-meaning he would rather not have to fight than have a nominee with fewer questions about his or her conservative positions.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has reportedly told Trump that the judges presenting the fewest obstacles to confirmation are Raymond Kethledge of the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and Thomas Hardiman of the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Senate Republicans hold only a 51-49 majority, leaving them hardly any margin if Democrats hold the line.

Kennedy, 81, announced on June 27 plans to retire after three decades on the court, effective on July 31.

M Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) led a protests against Kavanaugh's nomination on the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington.

The timing of the nomination means that Kennedy's replacement could be confirmed before the start of the Supreme Court's next term on the first Monday in October.

"Beyond the procedure, beyond the gamesmanship, it is a life-and-death important decision to be made by this court on so many issues", Senator Dick Durbin of IL, the body's No. 2 Democrat, said Sunday on NBC.

Barrett, 46, has the least judicial experience of the four, with only eight months as a judge after spending most of her career as a conservative legal scholar.

Perhaps the most intense issue that advocacy groups will focus on during the contested confirmation hearings to follow will be whether Kavanaugh may vote to overturn the seminal 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that ruled that the right to abortion was constitutionally protected. Lisa Kurkowski - have said they would be disinclined to vote for a nominee who would overturn Roe v. Wade and not treat the ruling as settled law. The group says it has reserved air time nationally and in those same states for another four weeks.
