"I think that many people in the European Union are thinking that they just have to wait long enough and Britain will blink".

Giving evidence to a committee of MPs shortly after May's announcement, Robbins denied the prime minister would be directly negotiating with Barnier in Brussels.

And he said it was "useful" that European Union chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier had raised questions about the prime minister's blueprint for the UK's future trading relationship with the EU.

Raab is expected on Thursday in Brussels for further talks and pledged to strain "every sinew" to get "the best deal".

Not quite the line Mr Raab - a die-hard Brexiteer who's vowed to ramp up the Government's own prep for a "no deal" - will have wanted splashed all over the news this morning.

"What we have got is the officials hitherto who have been informing and supporting the negotiation in once place, with a ministerial chain of command clearly set out".

On Sunday sugar maker Tate & Lyle, which backed Brexit, said the Prime Minister's white paper was confusing.

'You can't have one side fulfilling its side of the bargain and the other side not, or going slow, or failing to commit on its side. I think it is.

Part of the Government's planning involves securing supplies of food and medicines.

"And we also know that for that we have to make steps toward each other", he said, adding that the EU's collective interests had to be defended.

About 52 percent of Britain's total US$1.1 trillion trade in goods previous year was with the European Union and some investors have said such a chaotic scenario would seriously damage both the economies of Britain and the European Union over the short term.

Meanwhile, the Government published details of the legislation it plans to use to implement the withdrawal agreement taking the United Kingdom out of the European Union next March.

May's blueprint for the future relationship, formally unveiled in early July, envisages a free trade area for goods through a "facilitated customs arrangement" alongside a "common rulebook" with the EU.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the United Kingdom will not "blink" in Brexit negotiations, as he warned the European Union it risks forcing the country to crash out of the bloc with no deal. Sir Amyas Morse, the auditor general, told lawmakers in April that the divorce payments will become legally binding as soon as the United Kingdom signs a Withdrawal Agreement.

A hardline stance by the British government on the financial settlement could complicate progress, with Raab insisting on the link with the bill and a future agreement.

Raab told the BBC on Sunday the withdrawal agreement could be reached by October if the bloc matched Britain's "energy, ambition and pragmatism".
