"The atmosphere has remained peaceful" and the commission has not received any major complaints about the election, she said.

In an address to the nation ahead of the country's general election, ousted Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said Sunday that he would not support Emmerson Mnangagwa, who replaced him as the leader of Zimbabwe's ruling party Zanu-PF.

Chamisa said he had his own results from most of the almost 11,000 polling stations, saying he would wait for the official tally.

Mnangagwa also called on "citizens and candidates alike to exercise responsibility and restraint by patiently waiting" for official results.

"By the end of the day today we should be very clear as to an emphatic voice for change, the new, and the young - I represent that", Chamisa said as he voted in Harare, surrounded by vocal supporters.

Priscilla Chigumba, the electoral commission's chairwoman, said voting proceeded peacefully and went well overall, with turnout ranging from 60% to 80% in areas where the data was available.

Chamisa, a lawyer and pastor who leads the opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, has gone further, saying his own count shows that he won the election and that he's ready to form the next government. Mnangagwa, the former vice president, was sworn in as Mugabe's successor.

She says she is confident there was no "cheating" and says the electoral commission will respect the will of Zimbabweans.

"We will not steal their choice of leaders, we will not subvert their will", Chigumba said.

On Monday, Zimbabweans took part in the first presidential and parliamentary elections since long-time leader Mugabe's removal from power.

During Mugabe's rule, national elections were overshadowed by repeated voting procedure violations and the suppression of the opposition.

Out of Zimbabwe's 5.6 million registered voters, half are under age 35.
