An airline employee stole an unoccupied passenger plane from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and was intercepted by military fighter jets before crashing on an island in the Puget Sound late Friday.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport officials grounded flights temporarily during the drama but later said normal operations had resumed.

Authorities in the Seattle area have confirmed the crash of a stolen commercial airline plane Friday night.

Alaska Airlines acknowledged the situation in a statement: "We are aware of an incident involving an unauthorized take-off of a Horizon Air Q400".

No passengers were on board and according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, this is not a terrorist incident. "Was doing stunts in air or lack of flying skills caused crash into Island", the sheriff's office tweeted.

Local authorities quickly ruled out terrorism as a motive for the incident, and said the F-15s "were not involved in the crash". Confirmed information. this is a single suicide male.

The hijacker has been described as a 29-year-old mechanic who worked for an "unknown airline".

The sheriff's department said they were working to conduct a background investigation on the Pierce County resident, whose name was not immediately released.
