Holy Fire in pictures: Apocalyptic scenes as wildfires rage in California

  • They are fighting California's biggest fire — in steep forest terrain with rattlesnakes scorpions and poisonous plants

Since the Holy Fire ignited Monday in Orange County, Calif., the blaze ravaged more than 10,000 acres, destroyed at least 12 structures and forced more than 21,000 people to evacuate their homes by Thursday night.

The Holy Fire continues burning across Orange and Riverside counties, two of the state's most populous, and as of Thursday morning had scorched more than 9,600 acres - an nearly 50% increase from the night before.

Aircraft have been making flight after flight, dumping water and bright pink retardant to protect Lake Elsinore and other foothill communities as the fire sweeps through the dense, bone-dry brush of the Cleveland National Forest.

Milligan said he was so wary of the suspect that he avoided going to the area of the remote Orange County canyon where he lives.

Eric Lint, a neighbor of Clark whose cabin burned in the blaze, said he was not surprised by Clark's arrest.

Hundreds of firefighters are building barriers and constructing containment lines in an attempt to slow approaching wildfires threatening to torch thousands of homes in a lakeside community southeast of Los Angeles.

Clark's arraignment was delayed Thursday and could take place Friday, according to Rebecca Moss, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office.

Israel seizes Swedish activist ship en route to Gaza
On Friday Ezzat al-Rishaq, a member of the Hamas political office, told protesters along the border they were "committed to calm". The boat and another vessel, which was intercepted by Israeli forces on Sunday, set sail to Gaza from Europe last week.

Some 6,200 acres (25 sq km) of land has been burned in the fires since Wednesday, according the Orange County Register. "We continue to actively engage, but can not get ahead of the fire", it said. Firefighters on the ground and in the air battled the flames very close to homes along McVicker Canyon Park Road and near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Lake Street. "This shouldn't be called the Holy Jim fire, it should be called the Holy Hell fire", he said. Forrest Gordon Clark, 51, made an animated court appearance, marked by several outbursts. If convicted as charged, Clark faces life in prison.

The Holy Fire is only one of 15 large fires burning in California in August. At one point Clark covered his face with his long hair and later he stared directly at a camera providing a feed to reporters outside the courtroom.

Twelve of the fifteen largest fires in California's history have occurred since 2000, a trend spurred on by climate change.

The fire more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Sacramento has destroyed more than 100 homes and blackened an area about the size of Los Angeles. Extremely dry brush in the area, combined with steep hillsides, created ideal conditions for the blazes to spread.

The two-week-old Carr Fire that killed six people and burned more than 1,000 homes was 51 per cent contained.

The haze stretches to the Sierra Nevada mountain range and almost every major population center in between has suffered air quality considered unsafe for children, the elderly and people with asthma. The size of the fires brings new horror as the state still reels from enormous blazes a year ago and has yet to hit its most unsafe months historically.
