President Trump attorney Jay Sekulow on Sunday blamed "bad information" for erroneously denying that the president had a role in his campaign's response to a key June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower.

President Trump took to Twitter Sunday to insist he is not concerned about potential legal questions surrounding his son Donald Trump Jr.'s involvement in a 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians.

"I think it's very important to point out that in a situation like this, you have- Over time, facts develop", he said later, adding: "I agreed to go on your network and others days within being retained on this and had a lot of information to process, I got that one wrong".

The meeting was attended by the president's son as well as Paul Manafort, then chairman of Trump's presidential campaign; Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner; and several Russians, including the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and their representatives. "They are very risky & sick!" As the Inquisitr has noted, Trump Jr. himself released the emails that led to the meeting, in which he was promised information that "would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father".

Email released by Donald Jr. himself showed he had been keen on the meeting because his father's campaign was being offered potentially damaging information on Clinton. There have been no reports that information about Clinton was offered or exchanged.

"I wasn't involved in the statement drafting at all, nor was the president", Sekulow claimed in July 2017.

Trump was responding to a Washington Post report this weekend that although he does not think his eldest son intentionally broke the law, he is anxious that Trump Jr. may have unintentionally stumbled into legal jeopardy and is embroiled in Mueller's investigation largely because of his connection to the president.

Sunday's tweet appears to acknowledge that the meeting was actually predicated on opposition research: "This was a meeting to get information on an opponent".

So the Trump tower meeting between Trump, Jr. and the Russian lawyer is inconsequential.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating USA intelligence findings that Russians conspired to sway the election in Mr Trump's favour.

Reports on Saturday indicated Trump was getting concerned that his son, Donald Trump Jr, could become entangled in Mueller's investigation.

Trump earlier in the day tweeted that the Trump Tower meeting between his son, Donald Trump Jr. In it, lawyers stated that Trump had dictated the statement written aboard Air Force One as it flew back from the G-20 summit in Germany.

The president's lawyers argue that the meeting, in and of itself, violated no laws.

U.S. President Donald Trump holds a Make America Great Again rally in Olentangy Orange High School in Lewis Center, OH, U.S., August 4, 2018.

But here's the thing: This is a tweet about how the Trump Tower meeting was totally fine - nothing illegal to see here. Paul Manafort, who ran Trump's campaign at a crucial time leading into the Republican National Convention, is now on trial on charges concerning his previous business activities that grew out of Mueller's probe.

Sekulow also downplayed comments made by the president's other attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who recently said that collusion is not a crime, calling them "rather unremarkable".

Trump's attacks on the special counsel's investigation have been rebuffed by Republican leaders in Congress who have expressed support for Mueller.
