Iran dismisses U.S. talks offer as Trump reimposes sanctions

  • Hassan Rouhani and Donald Trump

Their plans were upended in May, when President Donald Trump chose to withdraw from the Iran nuclear accord and reimpose economic sanctions, the first wave of which took effect at midnight on Tuesday.

So-called snapback sanctions, due to come into force early on Tuesday, target Iranian purchases of USA dollars, metals trading, coal, industrial software and its auto sector. But a second tranche coming into effect on November 5 covering Iran's vital oil sector, could be far more damaging - even if several key customers such as China, India and Turkey have refused to significantly cut their purchases.

Trump announced in May that he was pulling the USA out of the 2015 nuclear deal, a key foreign policy legacy of his predecessor Barack Obama, which saw some economic sanctions against Iran lifted in exchange for limits on the country's nuclear programme.

The EU wants to preserve the economic relation reestablish between both partners within the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, to try to save the agreement.

Trump's withdrawal from the agreement in May has infuriated European partners who were determined to keep it alive and now find their businesses operating in Iran faced with the threat of United States legal penalties.

"I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!" he said.

"Prices are rising again, but the reason is government corruption, not U.S. sanctions", said Ali, a 35-year-old decorator in Tehran.

Mr Limbert, the former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran told BBC Radio 4 Today: "The President would like nothing more than to be involved in some grand gesture so he can claim 'I am the world's greatest negotiator and nobody else could'".

Multiple protests in Iran over currency drop, economic woes
United Nations inspectors said Iran was complying with the deal, but Trump felt the agreement did not go far enough. Today protesters in Shiraz were attacked with tear gas by security forces during strikes, Express reported.

The aim of USA sanctions on Iran is to change the behavior of the Iranian regime, not the regime itself, the officials added.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran still can rely on China and Russian Federation to keep its oil and banking sectors afloat. Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States.

"Preserving the nuclear deal with Iran is a matter of respecting global agreements and a matter of worldwide security". "But talks need honesty".

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters the global reaction to Mr Trump's move showed that the USA was diplomatically "isolated", but acknowledged the sanctions "may cause some disruption".

He said Washington was becoming isolated internationally and would come to regret imposing sanctions against the views of its allies and other world powers.

"If Iran were really serious they'd come to the table".

The blocking statute applies to anyone, foreign or otherwise, who is a resident in the European Union and also does business in Iran.

"The remaining parties to the JCPOA have committed to work on, inter alia, the preservation and maintenance of effective financial channels with Iran, and the continuation of Iran's export of oil and gas", the joint statement between the European Union and the E3 highlighted.
