Last year, the state had received 1855.9 mm of rainfall between June 1 and September 30.

According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin at 8 am, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are likely to affect Idukki, Pathanamthitta and Wayanad districts. Earlier, Power Minister M.M. Mani, who is from Idukki, said the situation in the district was "pretty bad"."The shutters of the Idamalyar dam were opened". By 2:15 pm today, all five shutters of the Idukki dam have been opened.

With rivers and streams flowing in spate, people, particularly youngsters, have been asked to exercise caution. A red alert was issued for Idukki and its adjoining districts in view of the possibility of release of more water from the Idukki reservoir.

This is the primary reason for flash floods in different parts of the state.

More than 53,500 people were staying in various relief camps across the state.

The rain fury in the state has so far claimed 29 lives besides causing heavy damage to crops and property. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited the flood-affected areas of Idukki, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram on Saturday to monitor the flood situation, along with Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala in the Kerala Assembly. Seven districts were pounded by more than thrice the normal rainfall.

Top elected state official Pinarayi Vijayan says the flood situation has become "very grim" with the opening of sluice gates of almost two dozen overflowing water reservoirs. Water levels in rivers are on the rise.

Idukki has received 129.80 mm rainfall. With water levels rising in various dams and reaching nearly maximum capacity, shutters of at least 22 reservoirs in the state have been opened to drain out excess water.

Vijayan warned of strict action against those found spreading rumours about dam openings.

An alert has been issued to people living in the downstream areas and on the banks of Cheruthoni and Periyar rivers. The departures continue as before.

"Our state is in the midst of an unprecedented flood havoc", Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

Wayanad district has been completely cut off by landslides and the state government has sought the army's help to restore the road network to the hill district.

Currently, Monsoon surge is active over the state of Kerala as a cyclonic circulation is seen over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area in the mid-levels.
