But the Prime Minister faces ongoing leadership pressure, with his authority significantly diminished by the capitulation to Tony Abbott and his band of rebel MPs.

Mr Dutton has now resigned his powerful position as Home Affairs minister and will move to the backbench, in keeping with the tradition of cabinet solidarity.

"Isn't it the case that when-ever it comes to a choice between his principles and his job, this Prime Minister stands for nothing at all", Mr Shorten said.

After Peter Costello declined to stand for the Liberal leadership after the 2007 election defeat, Brendan Nelson tried to fill the giant shoes of John Howard and failed. Kevin Andrews moved a spill on November 26, 2009 and lost. The very next day, Abbott publicly challenged Turnbull, and won.

Australia is due to hold a general election sometime before May next year. "I will support what the government does, I will support what Malcolm does". In March 2013, Gillard called a spill but no-one challenged.

Abbott led the Liberal-National coalition to a storming victory over Rudd's Labor in 2013.

Sky News is reporting that after Mr Turnbull called the spill, Mr Dutton put his hand up to challenge.

The vote this morning confirms Mr Dutton has the backing of a significant group in the party room - mostly conservatives - to replace Mr Turnbull as PM. I've spoken to nearly all the cabinet ministers from the Liberal Party.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the resignation would not have any impact on the issues the government continues to raise across the ditch.

'We've had a great period of stability over the past three years. I think he probably still is.

Australia's prime minister on Monday abandoned plans to legislate to limit greenhouse gas emissions to head off a revolt by conservative lawmakers.

Mr Abbott said: 'It's no way to run a government, making absolute commitments on Tuesday and breaking them on Friday'. "[Foreign Minister] Julie Bishop was the one person who nominated for that role and she's the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party".

"That is what people are telling me and that is what the government wants to do", he said.
