Manchester United's Jose Mourinho not confident of new signings before deadline

  • How Manchester City could look in

Mourinho also suggested he had not been given enough credit for guiding United to a runners-up finish in the Premier League last season, as he again suggested the negativity around the club was misplaced.

United have endured a hard summer transfer window as they have tried and failed to sign a host of defensive targets, with Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld and Leicester's Harry Maguire among the names on their wish-list.

Mourinho sounded pessimistic that he would make any last-minute signings when talking to media on Thursday. However, there was no indication that it was a deliberate tactic on his part or that he was being economical with the truth.

Liverpool have invested heavily over the summer as they look to pose a challenge to last season's runaway champions, Manchester City, but the same can't be said for United.

He said that he believes Liverpool will finish ahead of Manchester United in second place and Tottenham Hotspur will finish fourth despite a summer in which Mauricio Pochettino's team did not spend a penny in the transfer market.

Here, Sky Sports takes an interactive look at how the competition between the two Manchester clubs has evolved throughout the Premier League era, with City slipping to the third tier before fighting back to overtake their neighbours.

Wild brawl at nail salon

"Is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second".

Mourinho has won three Premier League titles with Chelsea and two Champions League trophies as Porto and Inter Milan manager.

"They returned on Monday". "The list of injured players is an important list and, after training, I will speak with that group of [World Cup] players because everybody is different, physically and mentally, to see how they feel they are and to understand how they can help or not help".

I was told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane.

The Red Devils coach has cut a sullen figure throughout pre-season with the former Chelsea boss unable to hide his dissatisfaction with Brazil worldwide midfielder Fred being his sides only high profile signing.
