First lady Melania Trump's parents were sworn in as US citizens in New York City on Thursday.

Melania's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were sworn in as USA citizens at a federal immigration court in New York City on Thursday. Homeland Security Police also escorted the Knavs both in and out of the ceremony, which was held at a federal building in Manhattan. They got no special treatment during the process, their attorney said.

"They have travelled a wonderful journey like many have, like millions have", said lawyer Michael Wildes. They would appreciate their privacy and we just thank everybody for their attention to this very important dialogue that we are having on immigration. "This is an example of it going right".

Presiding over the ceremony was NY district director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services Thomas Cioppa.

President Trump has previously spoken out against family-based migration, calling instead for a system that prioritises professionals and skilled migrants over relatives of...

The first lady was not present for the ceremony, and her parents told their lawyer she was in Bedminster, New Jersey, where the president spends time in the summer at Trump National Golf Club.

It is not infrequently the site of protests, but on Thursday, things were quiet as the first lady's parents came and went.

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Mr Trump two years later. Now, we're certain his shameless hypocrisy sees no boundaries.
