  • Robert Mugabe's old party wins Zimbabwe election without him

"The amount of time that he had from November previous year to now has not been enough for him to convince people, even more people in areas like Bulawayo and Harare, but when you look at the margins in which the MDC Alliance won in Harare and Bulawayo in Bulawayo, those margins have shrunk, a sign of Zanu PF's growth as a bit of confidence to ED's economic template of Zimbabwe is open for business", Moyo said.

Millions of people voted peacefully on Monday in the first election since the army removed Robert Mugabe from power previous year.

In particular, the use of soldiers to control the capital confirms suspicions that the generals who ousted Mugabe - including army chief-turned vice-president Constantino Chiwenga - are firmly in charge, analysts said. "We need security for the people".

Zimbabwe's minister of justice, Ziyambi Ziyambi, has promised to restore "peace and tranquillity" in Harare but acrimony and distrust has only increased.

Earlier, MDC leader Nelson Chamisa wrote on Twitter that he had won the "popular vote" in this week's presidential election, in which he faced off against President Emmerson Mnangagwa from the ruling Zanu-PF party.

With three seats yet to be declared, Mnangagwa's ruling ZANU-PF party had 144 seats compared to 61 for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), meaning the ruling party achieved a two-thirds majority which would allow it to change the constitution at will. Analysts blamed divisions within the opposition for the low tally. "We condemn in the strongest sense the action taken today", MDC spokesman Nkululeko Sibanda told reporters.

"The opposition. have perhaps interpreted our understanding to be weak, and I think they are testing our resolve and I think they are making a big mistake", he said.

A credible and peaceful vote was meant to end Zimbabwe's worldwide isolation and draw in foreign investment to revive the shattered economy.

Anti-riot police backed by water cannon trucks monitored the demonstrators, while MDC supporters also protested outside the conference center where election results are being announced.

European Union observers have listed several problems with the vote, including media bias, voter intimidation and mistrust in the electoral commission. Final results must be released by August 4.

Global observer missions from around the world released preliminary statements on Wednesday that largely withheld judgment on the allegations of rigging and other irregularities, though most at least noted that the media had been polarized and biased in the lead-up to the election.

The United Nations and former colonial power Britain also expressed concern over the violence, and called for "restraint".

Under Mugabe, elections were often marred by fraud and deadly violence.

The ruling party, Zanu-PF, says it is ready to peacefully concede defeat in the event that it loses the presidential elections, whose results are expected soon.

Mnangagwa's government, meanwhile, accused Chamisa and his supporters of inciting "violence" by already declaring he had won the election, the first after former leader Robert Mugabe stepped down in November.

If no candidate wins more than half the votes in the presidential election, there will be a runoff in five weeks.
