Serena Williams argues with the chair umpire during a match against Naomi Osaka, of Japan, during the women's finals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, in NY.
The American superstar claimed that chair umpire Carlos Ramos meted out penalties for infractions that male players could have gotten away with, specifically a violation for verbal abuse after she called him a "thief" and a "liar" for warning her for coaching from her players' box, then docking her a point when a racquet abuse violation followed.
Ramos was booed by the crowd after handing Williams an initial code violation for coaching, a penalty point for racket abuse and a game penalty for branding him a "thief".
While the 23-time grand slam champion had support from tennis greats Billie Jean King and John McEnroe who agreed there was a "double standard" in how officials deal with on-court tantrums by female players, there were also many who criticised Williams' sexism argument, including notable women in media and sports.
Two-time Australian Open champion and two-time U.S. Open runner-up Victoria Azarenka also came to Williams' defense on Twitter, writing: "If it was men's match, this wouldn't happen like this".
Tebogo, a caller, says the first code violation that she got was for coaching and her coach admitted that he was coaching and Serena said he gave me a thumbs up.
"But she faced neither in that Grand Slam final".
Osaka's mother Tamaki became estranged from her conservative Japanese family when it was found out that she was dating Mr Francois, a foreigner and a black man. Even after the match ended, the local favourite was seemingly miffed with the chair umpire.
"I just texted Patrick, like, 'what is he talking about?' Because we don't have signals", she said.
Those views were shared by BBC tennis presenter Sue Barker, who said: "I've sat courtside watching the men ranting at umpires and they haven't been given a violation".
"It began, really, two nights before, when she beat Madison Keys in the semifinals and immediately embraced the chance to play Serena in the final", Tennis.com's Steve Tignor pointed out.
The WTA has backed up Serena Williams' claim of sexism in the way she was treated by umpire Carlos Ramos during the US Open final.
"I feel like the fact that I have to go through this is just an example for the next person that has emotions, and that want to express themselves, and they want to be a strong woman, and they're going to be allowed to do that because of today".
When Osaka was announced the victor, the audience booed her, but Williams came to her defense.
He called her performance "unbelievable" and forecast a major boon for the Australian Open, which bills itself as the Grand Slam of the Asia-Pacific. "Thank you", tweeted the 20-year-old Osaka, who is projected to rise to seventh in the world rankings on Monday.
"He did change the course of the match".
"Men and women are treated in this way or the other way depending on the situation".
Then officials of the WTA and the United States Tennis Association pandered further to Williams' whims by largely ignoring her outburst and actually praising her at an untimely moment for her admirable contributions to tennis over a lengthy period - which no one has doubted - instead of dishing out an additional hefty fine for her outburst. It's hard to generalise things, really.
