Pressley's win was the latest in a streak of primary victories by younger, more diverse Democratic candidates against established rivals before the November 6 election.

"Apparently the district just is very upset with lots of things that are going on".

Secretary of state Bill Galvin - Massachusetts' longest-serving statewide official, in office since 1995 - fended off a Democratic primary challenge from Boston city councilor Josh Zakim, who conceded.

U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano, who district included Randolph and part of Milton, was dealt a stunning defeat by Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, who campaign had drawn national attention. U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy, a grandson of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, also endorsed the incumbent, calling him "a guy who won't shy away from steep odds or tough truths".

Mike Capuano has just conceded to challenger Ayanna Pressley at his campaign headquarters in Somerville.

While pundits and politics watchers have been predicting a surge of women in Washington during this year's midterm elections, Massachusetts House candidate Ayanna Pressley confirmed another exciting trend: Up-and-coming, young, progressive women candidates destroying male incumbents in primaries across the country. And black politicians in three states - Florida, Georgia and Maryland - have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in US history. "But Pressley is a proven advocate with an understanding of the needs of the district, and she would be a fresh voice in Congress. Pressley represents the present of the 7th District and the future of the Democratic Party".

Only two of Massachusetts's nine House members are women, and one is retiring.

Pakistan is still believed to have the strongest influence over the Taliban, making its cooperation necessary for peace talks. Trump used his first tweet of 2018 to attack the Pakistani government saying they shelter the "terrorists we hunt".

Although Pressley and her opponent shared a number of progressive values, her demand for the abolition of ICE, and her instance that she would bring a "bold activist leadership" to DC may have sealed her fate. Neal, the dean of the state's House delegation, first was elected in 1989.

Liberal Democrats Andrew Gillum and Ben Jealous are vying to become the first black governors in Florida and Maryland, respectively, while Democrat Stacey Abrams would be the first black woman governor of any USA state if elected in Georgia.

"We did everything we could do to get this done", Capuano said Tuesday night, according to WBZ NewsRadio in Boston.

Another Democrat, U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, is retiring at the end of this term, and that open seat touched off a political scramble with 10 candidates on the Democratic primary ballot.

Baker, a moderate who has been popular with voters in what is perceived as one of the nation's bluest states, will face Gonzalez, who served as secretary of administration and finance under Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick. "People of every walk of life".

In a tweet Tuesday night, Ocasio-Cortez congratulated Pressley on her landslide victory and declared, "Let's push together to make Medicare for All, tuition free college, and living wages a reality in America-all without corporate PAC money".
