Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings in the Senate

  • With Republicans hoping to move the Supreme Court to the right for years to come a Senate committee is beginning hearings for President Donald Trump's second nominee to the court. Trump is seen above at the White House on Friday

"A good judge must be an umpire - a neutral and impartial arbiter who favours no litigant or policy", Kavanaugh said in the excerpts released by the White House.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican who's the Judiciary Committee's chairman, pushed back on those calls, and outgoing Sen.

Guttenberg, who is Jewish, has been a vocal advocate of gun control since the at Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting.

"We can not possibly move forward".

Kavanaugh could be in the hot seat for up to 12 hours, with Democrats showing on the hearing's first day that they were prepared to probe his suitability for the lifetime appointment on multiple fronts.

Almost two dozen protestors were removed by Capitol Police from the hearing room shortly after it began, amid interruptions by multiple Democrats requesting that the hearing adjourn. So far, there are no signs of Republican defections.

The No. 2 ranking Senate Democrat said Democrats discussed in advance tactics for Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing on Tuesday.

But Republican Senator Orrin Hatch dismissed the concerns raised about the judge as "ridiculous". Both senators are considered potential 2020 presidential nominees.

Republicans also a year ago reduced the margin for advancing Supreme Court nominations from 60 votes in the 100-seat Senate to a simple majority in order to force through the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first high-court nominee. The job involved managing paper flow from advisers to Bush.

Canada-U.S. trade talks break down without a deal
Canada rejoined NAFTA talks on Tuesday, a day after the USA and Mexico reached a deal , tweaking the free trade agreement. Throughout the day Friday, it became increasingly clear that Canada and the US would be unable to reach an agreement.

Republicans also have released some, but not all, of the existing documents concerning Kavanaugh's two prior years as a lawyer in the White House Counsel's Office under Bush. He was again sitting in the hearing room for the afternoon session.

Kavanaugh sat silently and impassively for most of the day, occasionally sipping water and taking notes on senators' points. Video of the encounter was shared widely on social media.

"My mom taught me that judges don't deal in abstract theories; they decide real cases for real people in the real world", Kavanaugh said.

White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah addressed the moment on Twitter earlier Tuesday, saying, "As Judge Kavanaugh left for his lunch break, an unidentified individual approached him".

Democratic Senators mulled making an even more dramatic scene, according to Politico report published Tuesday night.

But Democrats are powerless to delay a vote on Kavanaugh since McConnell led Republicans, during the Gorsuch nomination, in eliminating the 60-vote filibuster threshold that had been in place for Supreme Court nominations.

"Judge Kavanaugh is one of the most qualified nominees, if not the most qualified nominee that I've seen", said Sen. The court begins its next term in October.

Democrats argue that they still haven't seen 90 percent of Kavanaugh's past work product and did not have time to review what they did receive prior to the hearing. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who said Kavanaugh told her that the high court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion is "settled law".

Speaking on CNN, Mr Guttenberg said: "I simply said, 'Hi, my name is Fred Guttenberg, I'm the father of Jaime Guttenberg, who was murdered in Parkland".
