Federer's round-the-net victor leaves Kyrgios speechless

  • Andy Murray enduring the heat- Andy Murray enduring the heat

"At 3-all, love-40, if I take one of those points, the match is wide open", Kyrgios said.

When she ripped a backhand victor to claim the third set's opening game on Sunday, Williams let out her loudest shout of the day, leaning forward and rocking both arms.

Yes, Roger does reach the ball and yes, Nick Kyrgios was just as shocked as the rest of us.

The No.2 seed was leading two-sets when he produced a truly outrageous victor.

By the third set Kyrgios was running out of ideas as Federer kept up the pressure and broke Kyrgios for a 6-5 lead.

Andreev did the same in the fourth set but he couldn't stay at the same level in the decider, missing the opportunity to pull the break back at 2-4 in the final set to hand the win to his rival. That was, anyone who saw it surely would agree, the on-a-full-sprint, drop-shot-retrieving, flick-from-a-few-inches-off-the-ground, forehand-around-the-net-post, jaw-dropping victor that Federer conjured up close to the conclusion of the 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 tour de force in the third round Saturday.

Kyrgios had come out firing, but once Federer had saved four break points in the seventh game of the opening set the Australian was at a loss.

"It was tough. I knew how important that first set was". The ensuing victor didn't go over the net - it went around.

"If I can be any sort of inspiration for guys coming up on the tour, that would be great, you know, in whatever shape and form that is".

Greyhound bus crash: Seven killed in New Mexico collision
Police say the westbound lane is closed as they investigate what caused the accident that caused multiple injuries and casualties. Greyhound said a total of 47 passengers were on board during the time of the crash.

Much has been made of the 23-year-old's career to date.

When asked if he feels like a different person during a Grand Slam, he said, "You're overthinking this".

When it caught the net, Federer took full advantage, breaking Kyrgios for a fourth time before closing out the match the very next game. "I have barely done anything", he said.

A backhand victor sent Roger 4-0 in front and he clearly showed the writings on the wall to his rival who beat him in two out of previous three matches.

Only No. 3 seed and defending champion Sloane Stephens remains among the top-four seeds.

"I thought the first set was key".

The defending men's champion Rafael Nadal reached his fourth Grand Slam quarterfinal of the season, and 36th of his career, by getting past Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4, while No. 11 John Isner of the USA made it that far at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2011. I couldn't have done much today.

The semi-final clash against Novak Djokovic was the repeat of the last year's final and another stern test for Roger who scored a 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-2 win in two hours and 44 minutes for the place in the title match.

"I definitely think it was a special one, no doubt about it", he said. But, I mean, obviously I want to achieve more in the sport.
