  • Hurricane Florence weakens but could threaten U.S. coast next week

The National Hurricane Center predicts Florence will become a major hurricane, a category 3 or stronger storm, again by early next week. The Hurricane Center is forecasting a turn toward the west-northwest with a further decrease in forward speed expected later Thursday, followed by a turn toward the west by the weekend. Many of us are not prepared for what it would be like if a hurricane made landfall here. Note that the strands are clustered together where the forecast track is most confident, but they diverge where the course of the storm is less certain.

"Little change in intensity is expected during the next day or so, but restrengthening is forecast over the weekend, " the hurricane center's advisory said.

The disturbance was followed by a tropical wave heading off the African coast, which the NHC rated 80 per cent likely to develop over the next 48 hours.

"An area of high pressure over the central Atlantic will bridge westward and join with an existing high pressure near the U.S. East Coast over the next several days", AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.

The risk of impact on the U.S. East Coast from Florence next week has increased, the Miami-based weather forecaster added.

If he is unwilling to serve until the next general election in 2020, the governor would have to appoint another interim senator. In 2016, the two shared an embrace at the National Museum of African American History and Culture opening in Washington, D.C.

Florence was downgraded late Thursday night into a tropical storm but all indications are saying that the storm has stopped weakening.

Some models show Florence veering sharply north in the coming days and missing the United States entirely, while others have it moving toward the coast. It's wise to have a plan ready to go in case a storm should strike.

This time of year, it's always a good idea to check hurricane kits and begin thinking about what steps you might take if a hurricane were to hit New England.

As of right now, not much is known about what the hurricane is going to do next.

Hubbard said so far this year, the Atlantic season has been fairly average, but it's been busier in the Pacific. If they strengthen into tropical storms, they could become Helene and Isaac.
