Barcelona's captain, Lionel Messi, is missing from the shotlist for the first time in 10 years and this is causing uproar among his fans.

Egyptian football star Mohamed Salah has made it into the final three-man shortlist for the Best FIFA Men's Player award for 2018.

A five-time victor of the award, Messi has also finished second in the voting for each of Ronaldo's five previous wins in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

The winners will be announced on 24 September.

Salah has been a revelation for Liverpool, scoring 43 goals in all competitions last season for the Reds and helping to fire Jurgen Kloop's side to the Champions League final, where he was forced off after suffering a shoulder injury.

Lionel Messi thinks Barcelona have to focus on the Champions League this season after underwhelming among Europe's elite in each of their past three campaigns.

France's World Cup winning captain Hugo Lloris is in contention for the goalkeeper of the year award, alongside Golden Glove victor Thibaut Courtois and Danish shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel.

Messi believes Ronaldo played a a crucial role in Los Blancos' three consecutive Champions League titles, but opted for a new adventure in Italy.

"We have done okay but it is only the start and we have three weeks ahead with the Champions League". Ever since, he has been nominated as part of the shortlist, winning 5 times.
