Senate committee vote on Kavanaugh delayed until next week

  • Bitter Senate fight to confirm Kavanaugh plunges into deeper chaos over letter

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, came to Collins' defense on Wednesday, tweeting through his office account that "every Democrat should be condemning these antics in ME - attempting to bribe Senator Collins to vote against Judge Kavanaugh and threatening sexual violence against staffers if she votes for him is absolutely disgusting".

Kavanaugh said that after a day packed with demonstrators, and not realizing who the man was, "I assumed he was a protestor". If I had known who he was, I would have shaken his hand, talked to him, and expressed my sympathy. "Mr. Guttenberg has suffered an incalculable loss". The idea is that people can donate now, before the outrage over Kavanaugh inevitably fades into a memory, and if Collins votes against his confirmation, everyone's money is refunded.

The back-and-forth between Grassley and Blumenthal came after Democrats tried to similarly adjourn Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing last week.

Kavanaugh's security detail ushered him out in a "split second", according to the judge's response to a written question from Sen.

Government watchdog agency Judicial Watch officially filed an ethics complaint against Democratic Sen. The Judiciary Committee voted 11 to 10 on Thursday to hold the vote at 1:45 p.m. on Sept. 20, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is expected to set full Senate votes on Kavanaugh's confirmation for the final week of September.

The 28 new documents released late Wednesday are from Kavanaugh's time in the White House counsel's office during the George W. Bush administration.

Apple: China Tariffs by Trump Will Hurt Company
Trump's announcement came the day after the public comment period closed on tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports. The U.S. imported US$505 billion of Chinese products in 2017, Census Bureau figures show.

Under questioning last week, Kavanaugh clarified that while he may have attended meetings and hearing prep sessions, he wasn't the primary White House official assigned to Pryor. "Booker appears to have violated provisions 5 and/or 6 of Rule 29 of the Standing Rules of the Senate (Rev. Jan. 24, 2013)", says the letter from Judicial Watch.

"The harassment campaign from the far Left against Susan Collins - including threats of sexual violence against her staffers and potential illegal bribery - is truly shameful, and shows the desperation of the radicals to try to stop the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh".

Sen. Booker made headlines last week when he claimed he was "breaking Senate rules" by leaking Judge Kavanaugh's confidential emails surrounding 9/11 and other issues; daring GOP leadership to "bring the charges". Collins' vote could decide whether he is appointed.

The committee was hoping to quickly process Kavanaugh's unusually long paper trail and relied on Bush's lawyer, Bill Burck, to compile the documents, first estimated to be 900,000 pages from Kavanaugh's time in the counsel's office.

Democrats have hammered Kavanaugh over a belief that he will weaken access to health care and abortion while undoing environmental regulation.

"If confirmed, I would respect the law of precedent given its centrality to stability, predictability, impartiality and public confidence in the rule of law", Kavanaugh said.
