Strengthening Hurricane Florence eyes Carolinas, 1 million order

  • Hurricane Florence Is Traveling A Similar Path As A 1933 Storm That Got Very, Very Close To D.C.

North Carolina residents boarded up their homes and piled cars with valuables on Monday after officials in that state and two others warned coastal areas would be hit from Hurricane Florence, the most powerful storm to take aim at the U.S. mainland this year.

In North Carolina, six more counties were placed under mandatory evacuation orders on Monday night, hours after the first order in Hatteras Island. An estimated 250,000 more people from the northern Outer Banks were due to be sent to higher ground starting Tuesday at midday.

For many people, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge: If Florence slows to a crawl just off the coast, it could bring torrential rains all the way into the Appalachian mountains and as far away as West Virginia, causing flash floods, mudslides and other risky conditions in places that don't usually get much tropical weather.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam's office predicted "catastrophic inland flooding, high winds and possible widespread power outages", cautioning that the deadliest risk would come from flooding.

"It's not just the coast", Graham said.

With little wind shear to pull the storm apart, Florence's hurricane wind field is expected to expand over the coming days, increasing its storm surge and inland wind threats. Among the airports commonly mentioned are those in North and SC, as well as Norfolk and Richmond, VA and Savannah, GA.

Florence was upgraded twice on Monday, from Category 3 to 4, prompting evacuation orders in the coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. reports CNN. That would be the same day that Wake Forest hosts Boston College in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup, and two days before six power conference schools host nonconference games in the Carolinas and Virginia.

Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall on Thursday but swells are already affecting the US East Coat.

Preparations intensified up and down the densely populated coast.

"The hurricane's wind field is expected to grow with time as it approaches the coast of the Carolinas", said John Quagliariello from the National Weather Service in Columbia. "We don't want to risk one SC life".

The state has submitted a request to President Donald Trump for a federal disaster declaration, clearing the way for federal money and assistance for any damage from the storm.

St. Andrews University and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke are canceling classes and all activities as of 8 a.m. Wednesday.

"Everyone in North Carolina needs to keep a close eye on Florence and take steps now to get ready for impacts later this week", Cooper said.

President Donald Trump tweeted the federal government stood prepared to assist the governors of the U.S. states affected.

"I know they've been constantly meeting about the hurricane", Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora said.

McMaster said, "we know this evacuation order is an inconvenience".

Don't concentrate on the exact forecast track of Hurricane #Florence.

"We want to make sure that we get the best data going to the National Hurricane Center. and to emergency managers and to the media so we can get people out of the way", Flaherty said.

Maximum wind speeds were 140mph with hurricane-force winds extending up to 40 miles (65km) from the centre.
