As Hurricane Florence approached the Carolinas on Thursday morning, Trump disputed the official conclusion that almost 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico because of Hurricane Maria a year ago, claiming the figure was a Democratic plot to make him look bad. On Thursday, Trump insisted in a pair of tweets that the official death toll was concocted by "Democrats" as part of a conspiracy to "make me look as bad as possible". That figure was then compared to the number of deaths reported from September 2017, when the hurricane hit, to February 2018, when the island still struggled with blackouts and a shortages of essential supplies on the road to recovery.

This is what is going on: Some "scientists"-read anti-Trump Democratic Party activists-constructed a theoretical baseline of how many deaths would be expected to occur in Puerto Rico during the months after Hurricane Maria".

In fact, the Puerto Rico numbers were collected over months by researchers at George Washington University's school of public health, at the request of the territory's governor. I don't know. We will never know how many, how many we lost.

The findings were embraced by the government of Puerto Rico as the study was released.

Earlier this week, Trump hailed his administration's response to Maria as "an incredible, unsung success". "I love Puerto Rico!".

He was reacting to President Donald Trump's tweets that dispute the projected death toll from Hurricane Maria past year. "He's the president of the United States, but I don't agree with a lot of what he says about us".

"I disagree with @POTUS", Scott tweeted.

Mr. Trump's Twitter screed was the latest in a string of callous remarks he has made about the deaths in Puerto Rico, which have caused even some of his allies to cringe.

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora wasn't a big fan of President Donald Trump's comments Thursday about Puerto Rico.

That number was produced by public health experts at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in a report commissioned by the US territory's governor, Ricardo Rossello. "But I reject the notion that this was at all connected to any political consideration".

Ryan didn't answer a question about whether Trump's claim disturbed him or whether Trump should apologize to the victims' families. He added: "Casualties don't make a person look bad".

She also said Trump was trying to bully Puerto Rico with his tweets and called him "delusional, paranoid, and unhinged from any sense of reality". The George Washington University report said the actual number of excess deaths was estimated to be in the range of 2,658 to 3,290.
