Trump rejects Puerto Rico hurricane death toll

Maria, which made landfall as a Category 4 storm, caused an island-wide power outage, nearly completely knocked out communications including satellite phones and left 80% of the island without access to water in the days following the storm. "I trust that this process was carried out properly", he said. Trump called the count a move by Democrats to make him look bad.

House Democratic Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer slammed Mr. Trump for focusing on himself.

In the Oval Office on Tuesday, the president praised his administration's response to the series of storms in 2017.

Trump said Tuesday that Tropical Storm Isaac, which had been downgraded from hurricane status overnight, now poses a threat to Puerto Rico.

Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!

"Nearly 3,000 people died", tweeted Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA that there have been 2,431 applications for funeral assistance from Puerto Rico, as of July 30.

Trump, having long struggled to express empathy at times of national crises, sparked outrage when during his visit to the island he feuded with the mayor of San Juan and passed out paper towels to victims like he was shooting baskets.

The elderly and impoverished were hardest hit by the hurricane. "The Trump administration led us to believe they were helping when they weren't up to par, and they didn't allow other countries to help us", Cruz told CNN in late August.

"Puerto Rico was, actually, our toughest one of all because it's an island, so you just - you can't truck things onto it".

Pogba had a bust-up with Mourinho in February and was named on the bench for a number of crunch fixtures last term. Pogba has played four matches this season for United, scoring twice.

But Trump, that official said, was unwilling to admit even internally that more needed to be done on the island.

"Only Donald Trump would try to make the deaths of almost 3,000 Americans into a story about himself and his political fortunes", Mr. Hoyer said in a statement.

Meanwhile, yet another monster storm spins towards the East Coast, millions of US citizens are in harm's way, and he's tweeting about two-day old news.

The panel seemed to agree that Trump hasn't done very much to convince the Puerto Rican people he really sympathizes with them.

Marty Bahamonde, director of disaster operations at FEMA, confirmed that the agency delivered the bottled water to the island but said the agency didn't track specific shipments.

The General Services Administration in Puerto Rico (GSA) says it requested FEMA's inventory of excess water through a federal program on April 17 and was given approval to use the supplies on April 26.

Hurricane Maria hit on September 20, 2017, and is estimated to have caused $100 billion in damage.

All told, about 1,800 people died in that 2005 storm.
