Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump's second nominee to the Supreme Court, was confirmed to the court on Saturday with a Senate vote largely divided along party lines.

Cory Gardner's Denver office in a last-ditch attempt to change the Republican's mind ahead of Saturday's confirmation vote for Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. And he has reason for a "yes" vote: Manchin, who voted for Gorsuch's confirmation, is up for reelection in a state that Trump won in 2016.

Kavanaugh was confirmed 50-48 Saturday during a historic roll call vote in the Senate chamber. In the debate preceding the vote, senators sounded as though they were describing two different men.

But the fight was defined by sexual assault accusations, especially Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that a drunken Kavanaugh tried raping her at a 1982 high school gathering.

The vote closes out a bitter struggle over Kavanaugh's nomination, inflamed by accusations that he sexually assaulted women in the 1980s.

In an essay published Thursday by The Wall Street Journal, Kavanaugh said he regretted parts of his opening statement and testimony, saying they reflected his frustration. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called the 53-year-old Kavanaugh a victim of "an ugly left-wing smear campaign" and charged Democrats with character assassination.

After remaining undecided on whether Kavanaugh's nomination should move forward, Murkowski rendered her decision Friday in dramatic fashion.

The FBI submitted its investigation early this week, which was then sent to the Senate for the lawmakers to have a look at it and have an informed decision.

Democrats belittled the bureau's findings, saying agents constrained by the White House had not reached out to numerous other people with potentially important information.

Support by Collins and Manchin gives Kavanaugh at least 51 votes in the 100-member Senate for an election-season victory against the backdrop conflict of the #MeToo movement and staunch conservative support for Trump.

The Senate leader said the judge's life was being destroyed by uncorroborated rumors, and the GOP needed to bring it to a conclusion.

"November is coming", said one of their banners. That's never happened in a Supreme Court confirmation.

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49 margin, and announcements of support Friday from Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of ME, along with Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, locked in the needed votes.

Manchin called Kavanaugh a 'qualified jurist'. More than 300 have been arrested in anti-Kavanaugh protests this week in the nation's capital.

Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona also said on MSNBC on Friday he would vote yes on Kavanaugh's final confirmation barring no late breaking developments.

Some of them continued raising concerns that Mr Kavanaugh would push the court further to the right, including with possible sympathetic rulings for president Donald Trump, the man who nominated him.

Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, a fellow moderate and friend of Collins, has indicated that she will vote no, calling Kavanaugh "a good man" but maybe "not the right man for the court at this time". They said he also seemed ready to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing his 2016 campaign's connections to Russian Federation try to pursue him in court. Two other women emerged and accused him of other incidents of sexual misconduct.
