A small handful of protesters held signs along roads in the capital Lilongwe, with one criticising President Trump's reported use of offensive language to describe some African countries earlier this year.

But if the comments appear to have bothered the First Lady she didn't it show it as she toured outdoor classrooms at Chipala Primary School in Lilongwe, which receives assistance from the US Agency for International Development.

She also spoke about the visit later in the day while talking to embassy staff at the United States ambassador's residence, saying: "What an incredible experience". The arrival ceremony, visit to Ridge Hospital, tea at the Jubilee House & meeting the hard workers at the U.S. Embassy made for an unbelievable first day.

Llamas, who is weekend anchor of "World News Tonight", is among the reporters following the first lady on her first solo overseas trip.

The convoy of the US First Lady however passed by without any incident and Mrs Trump might have seen the protests.

Kenya is the third stop on her Africa tour, which began on Tuesday in Ghana and continued in Malawi on Thursday.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta will also be in attendance.

At the primary school, the first lady watched dozens of pupils sitting on the ground in the sun as a teacher taught on a blackboard on the side of a building.

Her visit to Africa comes months after President Trump became under fire for calling African countries "Shithole".

"Our country's great First Lady, Melania, is doing really well in Africa".

She visited the school to highlight the benefits of a USAID scheme to support African education, which has seen the USA distribute 9.6million books to schools across Malawi.
