  • Ninth child dies following viral outbreak at New Jersey health care facility

A child patient with respiratory illness at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell died Saturday, bringing the total deaths among facility residents to nine.

The department said that the facility, which includes a pediatric center, had agreed not to admit new patients until the outbreak ended. The department can not confirm that the death of an individual who died Friday afternoon was related to the outbreak, officials said.

A staff member at the facility also fell ill during the outbreak, but has since recovered.

The Health Department says an inspection team found "minor handwashing deficiencies", and they continue to work closely with the nursing and rehab center on infection control issues.

The children affected were previously described in a health department statement as "medically fragile children with severely compromised immune systems".

Adenovirus usually poses little risk for healthy people and typically causes mild cold or flu symptoms.

The agency said the most recent individual became sick on or before October 22, which remains the last day when a patient showed new symptoms.

No new residents are being admitted for the duration of the outbreak, which won't be declared over until the center can go four weeks without any new cases.

The department is continuing to investigate the outbreak. "But they can also cause conjunctivitis and, particularly in children, diarrhea". "The strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living arrangements and can be more severe", according to the health department.

The bacterium can cause pneumonia or serious blood or wound infections.

Both the staff at the facility as well as state authorities are continuous in the efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

The viruses themselves are also "resistant to many common disinfectants and can remain infectious for long periods on environmental surfaces and medical instruments", the CDC says.

Adenoviruses, of which there are 52 different strains, are common causes of respiratory illnesses and most infections aren't severe, according to the CDC.
