It brought back memories of Simone Zaza's weird penalty miss for Italy at Euro 2016.

Pogba baby-stepped his way up to the ball in near slow-motion, taking an incredible 26 steps before making contact with the ball... His penalty was saved, but he stuck in the rebound.

"I was lucky", Pogba said after the game.

He continued: 'I think in some moments of the game we showed good football.

Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial scored either side of the break to earn United their first league win since the global break, but it was not entirely straightforward as Gylfi Sigurdsson's late strike created a nervy finish at Old Trafford.

Martial has struggled to find consistency over the past two seasons or so under Jose Mourinho amid criticism of his attitude and performances by the Portuguese head coach.

Manchester United paid £89.3m to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus in 2016, a transfer record fee at the time. "I always try to destabilise the keeper", he said in his post-match interview.

No Messi or Ronaldo but Clasico could still define season
A win will ease the pressure off the manager's back and the fans will have the first bragging rights at their oppositions. On the players' support, Lopetegui also said, "Obviously, I trust them and they trust me".

"Maybe he has to change his approach, but I don't want him to change his mental approach".

Pogba has become one of the world's most marketable players and he and adidas have enjoyed rich successes from his opening three collections.

Plenty of steps still to go.

"But, for me, the most important thing is he wants to go again". I don't like Mickey Mouses, fragile players who are afraid and go: 'I don't take penalties.' I don't like that. I don't like that, I like the player that I want to take it.

"Paul is like that".

"I think the referee sees the ball going forward away from the referee if you like and it hits him on the left knee".

Chris Smalling, on his 300th United appearance, made their task more hard than it should have been when his rash challenge allowed Gylfi Sigurdsson to halve the deficit from the spot, but the hosts held firm to quickly move on from their limp Champions League loss to Juventus in midweek. It took 18 days for an worldwide team of divers to find and free all members of the youth soccer team after flooding trapped them deep inside the long and complicated Tham Luang cave. "That is his technique and if he scores that is all that matters".
