A spokesperson for Hyperloop One said the company "did not have a contract signed nor have we been notified that the contract is cancelled", adding that they have asked the paper to publish a correction.

And Trump ally Senator Marco Rubio (Republican-Florida) called the situation a "catastrophe" for the Saudis that will "alter the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia for the foreseeable future". No one is going to defend activity of that nature.

Radio Sputnik's Loud and Clear spoke about the development of the affair with Thomas Lippmann, an award-winning journalist and author who has written about Middle Eastern affairs and United States foreign policy for more than 40 years, specializing in Saudi issues.

When asked if the US would distance itself from Saudi Arabia over the Khashoggi case, Trump said, "I do not want to do that and frankly they have a tremendous order, $110 billion", referring to a promised Saudi purchase of USA -made weaponry in the coming years. "Here we go again with, you know, you're guilty until proven innocent".

Khashoggi, a Saudi national who contributed to The Washington Post and criticized policies of Salman's son Crown Prince Mohammed, has not been seen since October 2, when he went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain official documents for his upcoming marriage.

Also Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the king and crown prince in Riyadh and said later the kingdom had made a "serious commitment" to hold senior leaders and officials accountable if implicated in Khashoggi's death.

Several officials CNN has spoken with say the suspected killing could not have happened without the direct knowledge of the 33-year-old crown prince, the kingdom's de facto ruler who is known by his initials "MBS".

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was tortured before being decapitated inside Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul, pro-government Turkish daily Yeni Safak reported yesterday, saying it had heard audio recordings of the incident.

Earlier on Wednesday, he told Fox Business Network that the United States relies on Saudi Arabia to fight against terrorism and Iran, and would thus be unwilling to walk away from the kingdom, a "tremendous purchaser" of US military equipment.

Trump says Mattis 'could be' leaving as U.S. defence chief
Last week, his ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley , announced her resignation, effective at the end of the year. I think we have a great cabinet, says US President Donald Trump . "He may leave, I mean at some point, everybody leaves".

President Donald Trump, who earlier warned of "severe punishment" if the kingdom was found culpable for Khashoggi's disappearance, criticized the allegations against the kingdom and compared it to the accusations of sexual assault leveled against now-Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation hearing.

Khashoggi, who had been living in the USA, visited the consulate to file paperwork for his wedding and has not been seen since.

The team included prosecutors and forensics experts in white overalls.

Pompeo was also tight-lipped after meeting the Saudi leadership in Riyadh, telling journalists he did not want "to talk about any of the facts".

Soon thereafter he told reporters that he will find out soon about what happened to Khashoggi.

In an editorial headlined "Why is the Trump administration cleaning up Saudi Arabia's mess?" the paper backed calls by United Nations officials for an independent worldwide commission into the disappearance of the journalist earlier this month, which has tarnished the image of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

A group of crime scene investigators investigating the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi left the Saudi consul general's residence in Istanbul after examining the premises on Wednesday, live footage from the scene showed.

Turkish forensic teams earlier this week searched the consulate building where Khashoggi was last seen entering two weeks ago.

Saudi officials have not responded to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press in recent days. Erdogan said there had been "a couple of delays", according to Pompeo, but the Turks feel confident now the Saudis will admit them to the consulate to perform their investigation. Turkish officials say Saudi officials killed and dismembered The Washington Post columnist.
