Saudi Arabia is the lynchpin of a US -backed regional alliance against Iran but the outcry over the murder has strained Riyadh's relations with the West. Dozens of Western officials, bankers and executives boycotted a major investment conference in Riyadh this week. Turkish sources say authorities have an audio recording purportedly documenting the murder.

"The President has made very clear we will hold those responsible accountable, but that America has important, long-term, strategic interest in our relationship with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and that we are going to do both of those things at the same time - protect our interests and hold those responsible accountable", Pompeo said.
