Friday's arrest of Shehbaz Sharif by agents of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Lahore involved a case of alleged corruption in a low-priced housing scheme when Sharif was chief minister of Punjab province.

Sharif is the younger brother of former premier Nawaz Sharif who was disqualified from his position in 2017 over corruption charges.

While the case has dragged on for almost a year, the timing of Shehbaz's arrest is being interpreted by PML-N as a bid to sabotage the party's chances in the upcoming by-elections.

He claimed that Shahbaz has been arrested to influence October 14 by-polls.

NAB was granted a 10-day physical remand of Shehbaz by an accountability court on Saturday. "Even the Peshawar High Court chief justice had inquired about this, asking as to whom the government had awarded the contract of Rs 71 billion metro bus project which could not be completed as yet", Hamza said, adding that Mr Khan's bias had been exposed as he got Shehbaz Sharif arrested for saving billions of rupees of people in various development projects.

Shahbaz's close confidant Ahad Cheea and Sharif's principal secretary Fawad Hasan Fawad are already in the NAB's custody in the Ashiana housing scheme scam.

Shahbaz is accused of ordering the cancellation of a contract given to successful bidder Chaudhry Latif and Sons for the Ashiana Housing Scheme, and engineering the subsequent award of the contract to Lahore Casa Developers, a proxy group of Paragon City Private Limited, resulting in a loss of Rs193 million to the exchequer.

Former premier Nawaz Sharif is now chairing a Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). They were holding placards and banners inscribed with slogans against the arrest of party president Shahbaz Sharif.

She said her party is being victimized in the name of accountability.

Marriyum Aurangzeb, the spokesperson of the Sharif's party linked the arrest to a plan to weaken the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).

Shahbaz's son-in-law Ali Imran Yousuf is also facing corruption inquiries in this case. Nawaz Sharif was released from prison last month pending an appeal against his conviction. Fawad had reportedly also provided "incriminating evidence" against the younger Sharif in the corruption case, making it hard for him to defend himself before NAB's investigators.

Head of Pakistan's opposition party appeared in a court for the first time on Saturday since his arrest 18 hours ago in what the country's anti-corruption body called a campaign against corruption, officials said.
