  • Nintendo Switch Just Outsold Gamecube's Lifetime Sales

Nintendo sold about 5 million Switch globally in the first half of its fiscal year, leaving just under 15 million units in sales needed to hit its 2018 fiscal year sales goal, the company reported Tuesday. Quarterly sales, meanwhile, rose to ¥221 billion ($2 billion) from ¥220 billion, behind company estimates.

For the holidays, the Switch is sure to enjoy a huge boost in sales thanks to the game releases Nintendo has planned.

Should Sony cross that 100 million mark, the PS4 will be one of the company's best-selling systems - ahead of the PS3 (80 million consoles sold) and original PlayStation (102 million consoles old). The company's 5.07 million units sold for the first half of this fiscal is up from 4.89 million for the same period a year ago.

Highly anticipated: Nintendo's Switch is midway through its second year and sales continue to be incredibly solid. For reference, the next most successful Nintendo console was the Nintendo 64 at 33 million units and the most successful (in non-handhelds) is the Wii at 101 million units. While the upper reaches of the list have remained consistent, a few year two contenders have either made it on or moved up on the list, showing some strong and continued traction for the Switch's first party library. "The holiday season battle begins now".

Vienna Open - Kei Nishikori to face Kevin Anderson in final
Now in ninth place, Nishikori with a win could move to within 125 points of the cut for the eight-man event in London next month. The 11th-ranked Nishikori is after his 12th career title but first since winning in Memphis in February 2016.

Still, Nintendo doesn't seem phased, and believes upcoming releases like Super Smash Bros.

President Shuntaro Furukawa, who assumed the role in June, said the sales target was a challenge but expressed confidence it would be reached. We must keep releasing new software.

Furukawa added that Nintendo's growth also relied on "more focus on online play", and "more genres and diverse games to draw in people who don't now play on Switch". In May, Pokemon Co. announced it would no longer release games on the handheld device, moving the best-selling franchise to the Switch.
