  • Protesters against US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh demonstrate at the high court in Washington ahead of his confirmation

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the awful pain and suffering you have been forced to endure", Trump said, sticking a shiv in Democrats and Christine Blasey Ford.

The nomination went forward, and Kavanaugh was confirmed in a slim 50-48 vote on Saturday.

The confirmation of Kavanaugh despite multiple sexual assault allegations enraged activists. And pundits presumed POTUS meant to take a victory lap after his nominee got the Senate's stamp of approval by a slim 50-48 margin following a very divisive confirmation battle, in which Kavanaugh faced multiple sexual misconduct allegations, but especially that he had sexually assaulted Ford when he was in high school.

The president delivered remarks ahead of the swearing-in ceremony at the White House.

The clerks are Kim Jackson, who previously worked for Kavanaugh on the federal appeals court in Washington, Shannon Grammel, Megan Lacy and Sara Nommensen.

"You, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent".

After taking the oath of office, Kavanaugh spoke to the audience vowing to serve the law in the Supreme Court.

Enjoy another edition of Thursday Night Football , everyone! And Cousins was the second-best quarterback on the field. Diggs said he hopes that carries through the rest of the season. "I still have faith in this football team", he said.

Democrats have said that an FBI investigation into the allegations that Trump ordered was too limited in scope to be useful.

The official swearing-in had take place on Saturday, but Trump chose to replicate the event this evening in the East Room of the White House. On Monday, the president said "evil" people brought about the situation that slowed Kavanaugh's confirmation.

"When I decided on Brett, I said he's flawless", Trump told the annual convention of the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Orlando, Florida.

He has denied the claims made by several women.

The accusations transformed the clash from a routine struggle over judicial ideology into an angry jumble of questions about victims' rights and personal attacks on nominees. Yet Kavanaugh is joining under a cloud. The main base of the Democrats has shifted so far left that we'll end up being Venezuela. Outside groups are culling an unusually long paper trail from his previous government and political work, with the National Archives and Records Administration expected to release a cache of millions of documents this month.

Mr Trump has repeatedly said that putting conservatives on the court - Mr Kavanaugh is his second appointment - was among the top goals of his presidency.

"It was very, very unfair what happened to him", the president said.
