  • ATP Vienna Kei Nishikori destroys Dominic Thiem. Monfils and Coric retire

Second seed Kevin Anderson also progressed to the last four after his opponent Borna Coric retired injured early in the second set.

"It's fantastic. It's been a huge goal of mine all year", said Anderson. Anderson added 19 aces to his tournament-record tally (56) and won 89% of 2nd-serve points won.

The world number eight never recovered from losing the first five games in only 20 minutes. Kukushkin did not have a chance to break Nishikori's serve until the second set and did not face a break point himself until the sixth game of the first set. With Nishikori leading 5-4, Nishikori had two chances and converted the second set point.

Now in ninth place, Nishikori with a win could move to within 125 points of the cut for the eight-man event in London next month. Nishikori hit 24 winners to his opponent's 18, nine off the forehand and eight off the backhand side, and had seven fewer unforced errors, 18 to 25.

A victor of 11 events, Nishikori hasn't triumphed since winning in Memphis in February 2016.

Kershaw, who now has the choice to opt out of his Dodgers contract, was left with yet another postseason disappointment. I think he excels in dealing with the media, which in Boston is a bigger job than some other places".

The 11th-ranked Nishikori is after his 12th career title but first since winning in Memphis in February 2016.

Top seed Dominic Thiem's dream of a home win in the Vienna Open ended on Friday when he lost in the quarter-finals to Kei Nishikori.

Ferreira, a former world No 6, went 2-1 in round-robin play at the 1995 season finale in Frankfurt, Germany, but could not qualify for the semi-finals.

The Japanese strengthened his advantage with an immediate break to love that launched his 32nd win of the season out 36 matches after clinching the opening set.

Nishikori applied a constant pressure and showed consistent depth in return games.
