But to many, Bolsonaro's most concerning trait is a lack of concern about Brazil's nascent political checks and balances, implemented in the late 1980's as the country tried to shake off two decades of military rule. His ascendance to power is leading many to fear the future of democracy in Brazil is in danger.

Jair Bolsonaro was elected on Sunday in Brazil and will become President on 1st January 2019. Dubbed "the Trump of the Tropics", Bolsonaro is a hard-line politician who campaigned against crime and corruption. In interviews with TV stations and on social media, Bolsonaro, a 63-year-old former Army captain who won 55 percent of Sunday's vote after running on a law-and-order platform, made clear he would push through his conservative agenda.

However, years from now, Brazilian pollsters, like the political pundits baffled by Mr. Trump's win, will be asking how a presidential candidate such as Mr. Bolsonaro, who also openly professed his love of dictatorships, could not only find acceptance but soar meteorically in its domestic politics.

Trump called Bolsonaro to congratulate him on his victory.

Bolsonaro has also spoken of moving Brazil's embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, becoming the only major country other than the United States to do so after Trump recognized the disputed holy city as Israel's capital.

"The fact Bolsonaro is already talking about reforms is a good sign", said economist Victor Candido of Guide Investimentos.

His election alarmed critics around the globe, however, given his defense of Brazil's 1964-1985 military dictatorship, vows to sweep away leftist political opponents, and a track record of denigrating comments about gays, women and minorities.

Trump plans 'tent cities' at US-Mexico border
The Pentagon said it's sending 5,200 troops to the Southwest border in an extraordinary military operation. The migrant caravan has been moving slowly north from Central America and its numbers have been dwindling.

"The Brazilian also share the idea of a necessary counter-offensive to contain the expansionism of China, which he accused of" buy Brazil".

Onyx Lorenzoni, a fellow congressman whom Bolsonaro has tapped as chief of staff, told journalists that Guedes would be responsible for structuring the government's relationship with an independent, autonomous central bank with targets.

"To increase deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions is to leave each and every one of us more vulnerable to an increasing risk of climate extremes", said Carlos Rittl, executive secretary of the Brazilian Climate Observatory.

The PT still has a solid base of about 30% of the electorate - but will need more than that to mount a forceful opposition to Bolsonaro.

Brazil's benchmark Bovespa stock index rose 3.7 per cent on Tuesday, boosted by strong corporate earnings and the resolve shown by Guedes on pension reform.

Bolsonaro plans to be here on November 6 to meet with outgoing President Michel Temer.

"The PT elected Bolsonaro", he said in an interview published Wednesday.
