An attack on the Boca Juniors team bus by River Plate fans left Boca players coughing and teary eyed amid the glass of smashed windows ahead of the Argentine giants' "superclasico" Copa Libertadores final second leg on Saturday.

Photos showed Boca captain Pablo Perez with his eye bandaged after being taken to hospital and other players suffered cuts to the face, arms, legs and chest.

"He said the game shouldn't go ahead tomorrow & suggested that CONMEBOL want to give the trophy to River".

Police attempted to disperse the unruly River Plate fans but their decision to use tear gas backfired as it sprayed through the broken windows and hit the Boca Juniors players.

Not the first time such an implement has been used by fans in match-ups between these two, it was reported shortly before the scheduled kick-off time that a certain selection of Boca players would be unable to compete as a result of the condition they were in.

"I have asked the inspectors to act quickly, to make it possible for the game to be played", he said.

CONMEBOL have now delayed the kick-off until 19:15 local time (22:15 GMT). The president of Conmebol, Alejandro Dominguez, had spoken on Friday of the need to separate the passion from the violence, and the difficulties of doing so.

After several postponements saw kick off time pushed back further and further, South American football federation CONMEBOL confirmed the match would be postponed until Sunday.

He had also promised that the move to a one-off final from next year would be safe, but after this chaos, the thought of what might unfold were tens of thousands of Argentinians supporting rival clubs to make the journey west to Santiago, where next year's showpiece will be held, is deeply disturbing. Boca players were angry that officials had even tried to get the game underway.

"They were throwing pepper gas, stones, everything", the Clarin website quoted Juan Carlos Crespi, a member of the Boca delegation, as saying.

Boca and River drew the first leg 2-2 on November 11 - a match that was also delayed by a day, due to heavy rain.

Television pictures from the entrance to the Boca dressing room showed many players and staff seemingly affected by the gas. On that occasion, Boca were disqualified from the competition. Away supporters are banned from football matches in Argentina due to recurring violence in and around the grounds.
