"It's a mandatory evacuation, what that means is, you don't have to leave, we want you to leave", Ventura County Fire spokesman Rich Macklan told The Independent on November 9.

Earlier, the fire devastated the town of Paradise in the Sierra foothills, home to 26,000 people.

There are two fires now burning around Malibu: the Hill and Woolsey fires.

"I was frantic", she told the NY Daily News.

The National Weather Service issued extreme fire danger warnings in many areas of the state, saying low humidity and strong winds were expected to continue through the evening.

Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Eric Buschow said at least two people have been arrested on suspicion of looting in his county.

In northern California, the Camp Fire had more than tripled in size to 70,000 acres (2838 hectares) and was 5% contained, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) officials said.

In Northern California, a blaze visible by satellite consumed the town of Paradise on Thursday and had burned almost 110 square miles by Friday morning.

The fire broke out near Thousand Oaks, an area about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles where an attacker killed 12 people on Wednesday, prompting the evacuation of 75,000 homes.

The fire started in Ventura County but raced into Los Angeles County, chewed its way through brush and into neighborhoods of Westlake Village and Malibu.

Ellen DeGeneres, Sandra Bullock and other stars give to California wildfire relief
Emergency teams have been sifting through the remains of more than 6,700 homes and businesses burned down in the town of Paradise. About 7,700 homes were destroyed when flames hit Paradise, a former gold-mining camp popular with retirees, on November 8.

Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro tweeted that he had abandoned his vast "Bleak House" museum collection of fantasy and horror memorabilia, while singer Etheridge said she had moved into a hotel.

Just 20 minutes before the Woolsey Fire ignited near Simi Valley on Thursday afternoon, another wildfire was taking hold mere miles farther west.

Less Sun and more rain should normally see any potential blazes put out before they get the chance to rise.

On Friday, officials ordered the evacuation of the star-studded beachside community of Malibu as a wildfire encroached upon it. Some were forced to abandon their cars and sprint to safety as the intense flames closed in.

At least five people died when an explosive wildfire swept through the Northern California town of Paradise, sheriff's officials said Friday.

The fire crossed U.S. 101 a few miles east of Thousand Oaks - the site of Wednesday night's bar shooting - and was headed south to the Pacific coast, in the direction of Malibu Creek State Park and Malibu city, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said. However, The Associated Press reported that the entire city of Malibu was under mandatory evacuation. "It's going to take some time", he said.

Evacuation notices were set for homes on the east side of Chico, a city of about 93,000 people about 90 miles north of Sacramento.

Many vehicles were abandoned along the roadway, and homes are destroyed.

Video of her drive out of town shows the fire emitting an orange-red glow in the distance in the nighttime sky. Los Angeles Fire Department Public Information Officer Erik Scott says the blaze has destroyed or damaged many buildings. The wildfire was also complicating those evacuation efforts by finding footholds on both sides of one of the region's main thoroughfares, the 101 Freeway.

Given the fires' rapid movement and volatile conditions, The Los Angeles Times is maintaining a live feed with the most current data available.
