  • Watch the Final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct Live!

Today's Nintendo Direct was fully dedicated to the incoming Smash Bros game, which launches on December 7 and is sure to be a big seller over the coming months.

Immediately, Street Fighter's Ken is shown as an Echo Fighter, and Pokemon's Incineroar are joining the fight.

These selections aren't particularly surprising-they were expected before the whole Grinch debacle-but they are a welcome finale to the 74 fighter lineup.

And Ken far from Ryu's shadow. Winning battles against them could earn you spirits, new support characters that buff your fighter's abilities and grant them additional ones when you're in a regular battle, or perhaps just unlock more characters for adventure mode. These characters will be created from scratch exclusively for SSBU.

There was a possible hint as to what the new characters would be, as director Masahiro Sakurai spoke about how there were a number of games, such as Xenoblade Chronicles 2, that they couldn't add playable characters for because the games didn't exist when they started development.

You'll get a free DLC taster in the form of Piranha Plant from Super Mario Bros., but only if you buy the game before January 31.

Instead there are collectable objects called spirits, with the main story mode revolving around all the Nintendo characters (except apparently Kirby) becoming merely disembodied souls. You'll explore a map and encounter other fighters. So, for example, three Sonic the Hedgehogs standing in for the Able sisters from Animal Crossing.

As is fitting for a wrestling-themed Pokemon, Incineroar's throws are also stronger than the average fighter in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

The Mii Fighter gets some brand new outfits to use, too, with a Splatoon set, an Arms set, a Chibi Robo costume, a Toy-Con set, and a Ray MkIII one all shown.
