In full: Theresa May stands defiant on Brexit agreement

  • Conservative MP turns on Theresa May during Prime Minister's Questions

USA comedian Rob Delaney provided his followers with a disturbing mental image, comparing the Prime Minister's current situation to a "festival toilet on wheels".

May is now fighting for her political survival, as several key ministers resigned, and members of her ruling minority Conservative party plotted to oust her over the draft Brexit withdrawal deal.

"Across the house there are concerns in relations to the backstop and I share some of their concerns, these have not been easy decisions to take". However, a rebellion of 48 lawmakers would mean Mrs.

Sterling had stolen the limelight overnight after a rash of resignations rocked Prime Minister Theresa May's government and threw into doubt her long-awaited Brexit agreement just hours after it was unveiled. I don't feel I can do that in good conscience.

Britain's Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Esther McVey arrives in Downing Street in London, May 1, 2018. "I won't make any bones about that", she said.

Jacob Rees-Mogg was among a string of MPs, including former Brexit minister Steve Baker, who revealed they had now submitted such letters to the chairman of the backbench 1922 Committee.

But Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn told her: "The government simply can not put to Parliament this half-baked deal that both the Brexit Secretary and his predecessor have rejected".

Raab wasn't the only member of May's government to walk out on Thursday.

Whether may can convince the British Parliament, is questionable.

There are growing suggestions that Conservative backbenchers will imminently move to force a no-confidence vote against her, and those MPs will be emboldened by the resignation of such a senior Brexit-supporting minister.

The deal secures the rights of the more than three million European Union citizens living in Britain and around one million United Kingdom nationals living in the EU. That could see tariffs on British exports, border checks and restrictions on travelers and workers - a potentially toxic combination for businesses.

These changes are expected to help Apple and Amazon have more control over the pricing and inventory of Apple products. Those who are now selling Apple products will need to be granted that authorization to continue selling.

If the agreement was abandoned, "nobody can know for sure the consequences that will follow", May said.

However, on Thursday night German Chancellor Angela Merkel made plain she did not want to unpick the deal.

Yet if the British Parliament rejects Mrs May's compromise soft Brexit proposal, there is no certainty that the "remain" cause would triumph.

This has some parallels to the Nancy Pelosi leadership fight in the US. May's allies in the Democratic Unionist Party and opposition parties.

The agreement sets out commitments over citizens' rights after Brexit, the proposed 21-month transition period, the £39bn "divorce bill" and, most controversially, the "backstop" to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Corbyn said May's withdrawal agreement and the outline political declaration represent a huge and damaging failure.

An EU official warned that Britain was unlikely to get a better deal. "But both sides still have a long way to go".

Tusk said it was "not for me to comment on the latest developments in London".

"All I can say is that the European Union is prepared for a final deal with the United Kingdom in November", he said at a press conference in Brussels held in the aftermath of the resignations.

"We have been preparing for no-deal and we continue to prepare for no-deal because I recognise that we have a further stage of negotiation with the European council and then that deal when finalised. has to come back to this House", she said.
