The Trump administration has worked to crush Tehran's oil exports to zero since May, when Mr. Trump withdrew the USA from the multilateral deal endorsed by the Obama administration that eased global sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran's suspect nuclear programs.

Hours earlier, Trump called the sanctions the toughest ever imposed by the United States against Iran.

Washington is re-imposing the sanctions after Mr Trump in May pulled out of a 2015 accord aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Iran's normally moderate President Hassan Rouhani told a group of state employees on Sunday that it was time to Iran is facing a "war situation" under the new and renewed US sanctions, but as CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reported from Tehran on Monday, he is also vowing that Iran will continue to sell its oil overseas.

However, the USA is expected to give a short-term waiver to eight countries which could include India because of its commitment to significantly reduces the import of oil from Iran.

Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, said the aim was to force Iran to "abandon its destructive activities".

For example, the USA does not want to have India and South Korea move geopolitically closer to China, Russia and other competitors and away from its influence.

The Trump administration's decision to restore sanctions "is the sea change the Middle East has been waiting for", he said. Experts say Trump believes the last deal was the worst ever struck by the US. He said that two of the countries will be bringing their Iran oil imports to zero, but just needed some more time to wind down.

Gazans bury three teens killed in Israeli strike
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "deplores" the deaths of the three Palestinian children, a spokesman said. More than 205 Palestinians, including 37 children, have been killed in Gaza since March 30.

Broader oil markets remain constrained by trade fears and impending oversupply.

The European Union is not one of the recipients, according to Pompeo who said those who receive waivers "have made important moves towards getting to zero crude oil importation".

In contrast, with the US-EU trade wars toned down, most large EU businesses are cooperating with US sanctions against Iran. "But they're not doing very well", he said. Sputnik discussed the sanctions' implications for Tehran with Iranian economic experts.

When asked whether the administration's efforts would push Iran closer to a nuclear bomb, he replied: "We are confident that will not happen". The effect of the initial sanctions is already being felt -the rial has plummeted, Iran's economy is depressed and the results are evident.

Iran has dismissed these charges and continues to keep its stand that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.

While not threatening to resume higher enrichment, Iranian officials in recent months have said this could resume at any time - and faster than before.

Iranian students stormed the US Embassy on November 6, 1979, shortly after the Islamic Revolution, taking 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

Dr. Molavi also said that if Iran can bypass the sanctions and sell 1 million barrels of oil a day, then the blow to the economy will be minimal.
