  • Trump steps up attack on Mueller

The White House declined to address a report on Tuesday that said Paul Manafort, Donald Trump's onetime campaign chairman, met in person with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. "I have never met Julian Assange or anyone connected to him", Manafort said in the statement.

CNN adds that "Mueller's team has been investigating a meeting between former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno in Quito in 2017 and has specifically asked if WikiLeaks or its founder, Julian Assange, were discussed in the meeting".

Assange is also suspected of acting on behalf of Russia's GRU intelligence agency to distribute emails and hacked documents belonging to the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 presidential election.

"I have never met Julian Assange or anyone connected to him".

Assange also fears extradition to the United States over WikiLeaks' release in 2010 of secret United States military documents and diplomatic cables. In an apparent reference to recent accusations against Paul Manafort, he slammed Mueller for allegedly ruining the lives of people who 'refuse to lie [for him]'.

Citing a "well-placed source", the Guardian says Manafort went to see Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London around March 2016, though the exact date is "tentative".

The Guardian reported Tuesday that Manafort met secretly with Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2013, 2015 and March 2016.

"Until a person is arrested, the government in my view has a compelling argument to keep the matter under seal", U.S. District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema said at the end of the brief hearing in an Alexandria, Virginia federal court.

A decision whether to unseal USA government charges against Julian Assange was delayed for a week by Judge Leonie Brinkema in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia on Tuesday.

Mueller said in the filing that, after signing the plea agreement, "Manafort committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters".

Manafort has been at the heart of several unresolved threads of the Robert Mueller investigation.

WikiLeaks has since responded to the report by declaring its publication as the moment The Guardian let a "serial fabricator" "totally destroy" the paper's credibility.

Brinkema said Townsend could have additional time to find a previous case of such a disclosure being made before an arrest, granting each side two weeks total to make further arguments before she issues a ruling.

One of the indictments referred to WikiLeaks, described as "Organization 1", as the platform the Russians used to release the stolen emails.
