Family members of the crashed Indonesian Lion Air JT610 react at Pangkal Pinang airport, in Bangka Belitung province on October 29, 2018.

"We dug and we got the black box", a diver, identified as Hendra, told broadcaster Metro TV on board a search vessel, the Baruna Jaya, describing how his team found the orange-colored box intact in debris on the muddy sea floor.

Also, Indonesian investigators searching for the flight recorders of the crashed plane said that they heard transponder "pings" that could lead them to the devices, and answer questions as to why the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 went down.

The National Search and Rescue Agency said the flight ended in waters off West Java that are 30 to 35 meters (98 to 115 feet) deep.

Lion Air chief executive Edward Sirait has acknowledged reports of technical problems with the aircraft, but said maintenance had been carried out "according to procedure" before it was cleared to fly again.

But the desperate search for the recording devices has been roundly hampered by strong sea currents.

Indonesia is Southeast Asia's biggest aviation market, according to the Center for Aviation, a travel market research company, bolstered by a rising middle class and the necessity of air travel to navigate the large archipelago of islands.

Officials said the non-stop search effort has sent 48 body bags containing human remains to police identification experts.

Carabao Cup quarter-final draw: Arsenal to host Spurs
Arsenal emerged victorious, but certainly not unscathed, from a midweek EFL Cup game against Blackpool ahead of Liverpool's trip to the Emirates.

The disaster has reignited concerns about safety in Indonesia's fast-growing aviation industry, which was recently removed from European Union and USA blacklists, and also raised doubts about the safety of Boeing's new generation 737 MAX 8 plane.

A passenger's wife, Inchy Ayorbaba, shared a video she took with her missing husband, Paul Ferdinand Ayorbaba, via WhatsApp before he boarded the plane.

It shows passengers' boarding passes being checked and people walking along a concourse and then down stairs with bright red and white Lion Air jets visible on the tarmac.

"We are prioritising finding the main wreckage of the plane using five war ships equipped with sonar to detect metal underwater", said Yusuf Latif, spokesman of the Indonesian search and rescue agency.

The Boeing 737 Max 8 passenger plane was flying from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang at 06.10 local time (2330GMT Sunday) but lost contact with the air traffic controllers about 13 minutes after it took off.

The country has had issues of safety and poor management in the past and its airlines were banned from flying into European airspace until 2016.

Lion Air has ordered 50 of the MAX 8 planes and one of its subsidiary airlines was the first to operate the new generation jet a year ago.
