The kingdom has faced intensifying worldwide pressure to be transparent about the death of Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post who was a critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Saudi Crown Prince described journalist Jamal Khashoggi as a unsafe Islamist days after his disappearance in a phone call with Jared Kushner, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

However the ascendancy of Prince Mohammed bin Salman changed the equations and he ended up being a critic of the establishment.

Khashoggi, a critic of Saudi rulers, was killed inside the country's consulate on 2 October.

"Everybody is milking this", said Maha Yahya, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.

"The Saudi king makes a phone call".

Saudi Arabia has faced worldwide condemnation for its shifting accounts of Khashoggi's disappearance on October 2 at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. But the White House intends to keep the sanctions limited enough to avoid a rupture in its partnership with Crown Prince Mohammed.

In a statement to the newspaper, Khashoggi's family denied he had been a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and said the murdered writer had himself denied this repeatedly in recent years.

"The whole world has been shocked by this grotesque killing, and it's vital that we don't let the outrage fade away without justice being done", said Kate Allen, Amnesty International UK's director, in a statement.

Khashoggi, 59, was the most powerful journalist in Saudi Arabia at one point of time and was very close to the ruling family. Khashoggi, who had arrived at the consulate to obtain papers to facilitate his marriage with Turkish girlfriend Hatice, was in the Consul General's room when he was grabbed by the squad.

Prince Turki reiterated that the Kingdom is committed to bringing to justice those responsible for Khashoggi's murder "and whoever else failed to uphold the law".

US President Donald Trump said Saudi authorities staged the "worst cover-up ever" but has also made more conciliatory remarks that highlight Riyadh's role as a US ally against Iran and Islamist militants, as well as a purchaser of US arms.

The body of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was dismembered after he was strangled as soon as he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the chief prosecutor's office in Istanbul said Wednesday.

"There's a lot of people who would say this is the wrong time to go to Saudi Arabia and meet with the leadership there".

She called on governments around the world to take action to reveal the truth, accusing the United States of taking a position "devoid of moral foundation".
