Google Announces $1 Billion New York Campus

  • Google to Spend $1 Billion to Establish New Campus in New York City

Back in November, Amazon picked up New York City and Arlington as sites for the company's new headquarters and announced plans to invest $5 billion with the goal of creating 25,000 jobs in each city.

Google parent Alphabet's chief financial officer Ruth Porat said it would lease large office buildings in lower Manhattan, which will become the centerpiece of a campus of more than 160 000 square meters.

Google Hudson Square will be the company's primary location for its NY operations.

When we came to New York City nearly two decades ago, it was our first office outside of California.

Why it matters: While Amazon is demanding New York City invest $3 billion in its plan to build there, Google is saying it is going to invest $1 billion to develop a campus in the city.

Back in November, we reported on the possibility of Google's expansion to their NY campus.

Hemp legalization clears House, off to president for final approval
Peterson chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee, on which Stabenow is the ranking member, and Conaway chairs the House committee. The provision had been included in the House version of the measure with support from President Donald Trump.

The new Google campus will be divided among three addresses in the West Village neighborhood: 315 and 345 Hudson Street, and 550 Washington Street, Porat said. According to official statistics, tech sector employment in the NY grew by 65 percent to reach an estimated 134,700 from 2010 to 2017. Google expects to begin moving into the Hudson Street buildings by 2020 and for the new building to be complete by 2022. But it's the search giant's intention to double the size of its NYC workforce within 10 years, and for that the company requires even more space.

The 1.7 million square-foot campus will be called Google Hudson Square, according to a company blog post on Monday.

Facebook, based in Menlo Park, California, has over 2,000 employees in NY. Google purchased that building for $1.9 billion in 2012.

But Google is not the only company headed to NY for business expansion.

She said the company's "investment in NY is a huge part of our commitment to grow and invest in United States facilities, offices and jobs". "We will have the capacity to more than double the number of Googlers in NY over the next 10 years".
