  • Defections along the closely guarded inter Korean border are rare

After Trump and Kim met in June in Singapore, negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang have been stuck due to bilateral differences on key problems over the scale of denuclearisation, United States sanctions, and whether to issue a war-ending declaration, among others.

"The message is that President Trump has very favorable views toward Chairman Kim and he likes him", Moon told reporters aboard a flight from Argentina to New Zealand, where he started a three-day state visit on Sunday.

South Korea's President Moon Jae-in is determined that this railway project will go ahead, says our correspondent.

At the U.N. General Assembly in NY that year, for example, Trump said the US would "totally destroy" North Korea if it continued with its provocative actions.

Mr. Trump had been in Buenos Aires for the Group of 20 summit. He said, "We are getting along very well".

Moon's top press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, was quoted by Yonhap news agency saying that Trump "asked that South Korea and the USA closely cooperate so the next summit will be another historical milestone in the process of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula".

The statement said Xi and Trump "agreed that great progress has been made with respect to North Korea".

A close look at Trump's claims on trade deal
Trump faces a series of diplomatic challenges over the weekend, most notably whether he can strike an agreement with Xi. The new agreement must be ratified by the parliaments in each of the three countries in order to take effect.

However, North Korea has taken steps to cease its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

Differences over how to denuclearize the North have kept the 2 countries from deciding the date and venue of the next summit.

The last defection involving North Koreans occurred in May when two civilians aboard a small boat fled to the South across the Yellow Sea.

The primary goal of discussions between the US and North Korea remains the creation of "a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula", said a White House statement issued Saturday following Trump's meeting in Argentina with Chinese Present Xi Jinping.

After their third meeting in Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, in September, Moon said Kim agreed to make a reciprocal visit to Seoul this year.

Prospects for a second summit to overcome a current logjam in negotiations will likely depend on whether either the USA or DPRK can show flexibility with regards to offering gestures surrounding sanctions relief or steps towards denuclearization.
