United States media say the two planes crashed during mid-air refuelling but this has not been officially confirmed.

A Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 224 F/A-18 Hornet conducts an aerial refuel utilizing a KC-130J in coorlation with Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course in Yuma, Ariz., April 10.

One of seven crewmembers has been rescued during search-and-rescue efforts underway after a "mishap" involving a pair of Marine Corps aircraft off the coast of Japan.

"The search and rescue operations continue for the remaining six U.S. Marines who were aboard [the aircraft] ..." the statement said.

It was not clear immediately clear whether the aircraft collided while crossing in the air, or if the KC-130 was in the process of refueling the Hornet when the incident occurred.

There were few early signs of trouble on board the flight, aside from a frozen video screen that would normally show the plane's path.

The pilots were disciplined in early November, pending an investigation into the incident, according to the Marine Corps Times.

A Marine spokesman released a statement saying one of the personnel from the planes "is being evaluated by competent medical authorities".

Five people were onboard the tanker while two were onboard the jet. "Japanese search and rescue aircraft immediately responded to aid in recovery".

It was unclear if United States military officials were also assisting with the search.

More than 50,000 USA troops are based in Japan under the bilateral security pact.
