At least one person was killed in the storm when a tree fell on a auto in Matthews, North Carolina, Sunday afternoon. North Carolina State Highway Patrol warned that even after streets are treated, they can freeze over again. The winter storm moving through the Southeast is expected to have a heavy impact in the Piedmont of North Carolina and southern Virginia, but is expected to have little or no impact farther north, the weather service said.

Severe weather affecting areas of North Carolina took effect on Sunday which resulted in overturned snow ploughs and obstructed roads and poor visibility conditions.

Most of the canceled or delayed flights were traveling into or out of North Carolina, South Carolina or Virginia.

American Airlines also issued a travel alert for nine airports throughout the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Flurries to light snow possible for southern Maryland and Northern Virginia on Sunday.

The storm was expected to move off the coast on Monday, although the NWS's lead forecaster Michael Schichtel warned it would continue to be "a unsafe system".
